SACNAS CONGRATULATES LONG-TIME SACNISTAS TO BE HONORED AT AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CELL BIOLOGY ANNUAL MEETING

The recognitions bestowed upon four SACNAS members, which includes two past presidents, celebrates their work and contributions to the field of cell biology

SANTA CRUZ, CA Four members of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Sciences (SACNAS)— Renato Aguilera, PhD; David Burgess, PhD (Cherokee); JoAnn Trejo, PhD, MBA; and MariaElena Zavala, PhD— were recently recognized by their peers at The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) and will be honored at the ASCB annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Dr. Trejo was chosen by the Society’s Minorities Affairs Committee (MAC) to be the 2017 recipient of the E.E. Just Award, which recognizes outstanding scientific achievement by an underrepresented minority (URM) scientist. Dr. Aguilera, Dr. Burgess, and Dr. Zavala were selected as 2017 ASCB Fellows for their advancements in cell biology and/or its applications, as well as their service and ongoing loyalty to the Society.

“It is always with great pride that we celebrate the achievements and successes of our SACNISTAS in their respective endeavors. The recognitions Dr. Trejo, Dr. Zavala, Dr. Aguilera, and Dr. Burgess have received from the American Society for Cell Biology reinforce our mission of ensuring that true diversity in STEM is reflected at all levels and within all STEM fields. SACNAS applauds these distinguished scientists for their well-deserved accolades,” said Dr. Lino Gonzalez, SACNAS President.

Dr. Trejo will offer a lecture at the ASCB Annual Meeting as the 2017 E.E. Just Award recipient, in addition to receiving a plaque and medal in recognition of her contributions. Among the 2017 ASCB Fellows are two SACNAS past presidents and Founder/Elders, Dr. Burgess and Dr. Zavala and Dr. Renato Aguilera, a former Board of Directors member. Dr. Zavala is the first Latina to be selected as an ASCB Fellow in the Society’s 57-year history, while Dr. Burgess— a former E.E. Just Awardee— is also the Society’s first American Indian Fellow.

“The American Society for Cell Biology and SACNAS— both organizations at the vanguard of inclusion and diversity— have played equally important roles in my career path. I went to my first ASCB meeting as a graduate student, and still recall with excitement that I made one of my first scientific presentations there. My involvement with SACNAS began when I was a postdoctoral student, and it was where I found a scientific family. It is an honor to be recognized by my peers for my work on plant cell development and my service to ASCB. I also feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to introduce many of the students I work with and mentor through the Maximizing Access to Research Careers for Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (MARC U-STAR) and the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) programs to both these organizations,” said Dr. MariaElena Zavala.

“It is a true honor to be recognized by my peers in cell biology. Having been a member of both the ASCB and SACNAS for over 40 years, they both feel like home. I have been fortunate to have worked with an outstanding group of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and colleagues over the years contributing to our understanding about how the cell’s cytoskeleton is organized, how molecular motors move things within cells, and how the cell’s musculature is organized to pinch itself in half at the end of mitosis,” said Dr. David Burgess.

As 2017 ASCB Fellows, Dr. Zavala, Dr. Burgess, and Dr. Aguilera will be acknowledged prior to the ASCB Annual Meeting Keynote Presentation with a plaque and pin for their contributions. They will also be invited to serve on a think tank for the Society’s white papers.

“After serving two terms as Chair of the American Society for Cell Biology Minorities Affairs Committee, and more than a decade as an ASCB MAC member, I am thrilled to receive this recognition as an ASCB Fellow. I am currently an active member of the ASCB and plan to be so for many years to come,” said Dr. Renato Aguilera.

MariaElena Zavala.
