Ernest D. Márquez, PhD, is recently retired from Federal service at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of SACNAS. He is also a private consultant in academic development, providing guidance in the development of strategies for enhancing student and faculty development in the sciences. He is a part-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, Advanced Academic Programs of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences where he teaches graduate level courses in biotechnology.
At the NIH, he served as associate director for special populations, in the Office of the Director, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). In this capacity, he served as director of the Office for Special Populations, which houses the Women’s Mental Health program, the Research Scientist Development program, and the Health Disparities Program. He also directed the Office of Rural Mental Health Research that coordinates and supports research activities and information dissemination on conditions unique to those living in rural and frontier areas, including research on the delivery of mental health services.
Prior to coming to NIMH, Dr. Márquez served as director of the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program (MBRS), Minority Opportunities in Research Division, National Institute of General Medical Sciences. In that position, Dr. Márquez directed efforts to recruit minority scientists to conduct biomedical, behavioral and social science research through mechanisms that support basic research, as well as faculty and student development.
Previously, he served NIH in leadership roles at the National Institute of Nursing Research as Chief, Office of Scientific Review; the NIH Staff Training in Extramural Programs Committee, the NIH Training Advisory Committee, the NIH Review Policy Committee; the Hispanic Task Force, and as President of the Hispanic Employees Organization.
Dr. Márquez served on the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University, College of Medicine, where he was tenured faculty member in the Department of Microbiology. He received the PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He also served as a destroyer deck officer in the U.S. Navy, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander, USNR.
He received numerous awards, including an NIH Director’s Award for outstanding performance and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Board of Trustees of the California State Universities.
