About SACNAS
SACNAS Chapters
Student chapters enhance year-round mentorship and networking opportunities for SACNAS student members. Through participation in SACNAS chapters, students, postdocs, faculty, and chapter advisors gain ongoing, local support for their development as scientists and science leaders.

Chapter members are encouraged to share information, resources, and peer-to-peer mentorship, as well as to take part in opportunities to give back to their communities and develop leadership skills. The annual conference and regional meetings provide venues for chapter members from universities and communities across the country connect with one another.

Opportunities for Current Chapters
Chapter Regional Meeting Proposal and Guidelines

The SACNAS Chapter Committee is happy to announce a innovative, new opportunity for SACNAS student chapters. Limited funding is now available for chapters to organize and facilitate their own meeting/event for chapters in their immediate region. The SACNAS Chapter Committee has developed a proposal that chapters can submit in order to request funds for a chapter regional meeting. The committee hopes to fund at least three chapter regional meetings by the end of 2008 at approximately $2,000 per meeting.

The Proposal and Budget Guidelines specify eligibility, required information for fund approval, and reporting requirements upon completion of the event.

Chapter Recognition

SACNAS chapters are extremely active in their communities and on their campus locations. Each year, the SACNAS Chapter Committee honors a number of chapters for their outstanding level of achievement in public service, mentoring, leadership, and/or community outreach. Chapters are evaluated—based on annual reports (see below)—on a number of criteria including accuracy of information submitted, retention of chapter members, innovation of activities and outreach, leadership training, fundraising efforts, and other aspects unique to the chapter.

SACNAS Chapter of the Year, 2007:

Paso del Norte SACNAS Chapter (University of Texas at El Paso)

SACNAS Honor Role Chapters, 2007:

Colorado State University SACNAS Chapter

San Diego State University SACNAS Chapter

University of California, Santa Barbara SACNAS Chapter

Annual Reports

Submission of annual reports is a requirement for chapters to retain ACTIVE status. Chapter officers may access the annual report form online; it is the responsibility of chapter officers to be certain to submit the annual report by the deadline to prevent the chapter from becoming inactive. (NOTE: chapters in inactive status are listed as such on the SACNAS chapter website, are not included in the chapter web pages, and are ineligible for grant funding or for SACNAS awards.)

To qualify for SACNAS National Conference recognition and awards, chapter annual reports must be submitted by May 13, 2008.

To maintain "Active Status" for the 2008-2009 academic year, chapter annual reports must be submitted by June 30, 2008.

Establishing a SACNAS Student Chapter
Chapter Policy

Effective organization, structure and a committed advisor are the foundation for chapter success. The process for chapter establishment is outlined in the Student Chapter Policy (PDF). Guidelines were created to assist in chapter development; it is recommended that individuals interested in forming a student chapter begin by reading the policy and following the outlined procedures.

NEW Chapter Application Requirements

Please follow the below guidelines in order to submit an official SACNAS Chapter application.

To complete an official SACNAS Chapter application, you must complete and submit the following materials to the SACNAS National Office:

  • Chapter Petition - Application requires contact information for the chapter, list of all chapter officers, chapter advisor signature. Chapter Petition (PDF).
  • Letter of Support - Chapter Advisor (a faculty member or administrator from your institution) must write a letter committing their support as an advisor to your prospective chapter. The letter must explain how the advisor will support the SACNAS Chapter with its goals and why a SACNAS Chapter is needed at their campus.
  • Chapter By-laws - All SACNAS Chapters must have their own By-laws for the governance of chapter activities. Sample Chapter By-laws (PDF) are provided as a template for your use. SACNAS also recommends that prospective chapters view the SACNAS National By-Laws as an example and to ensure that your chapter reflects the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Evidence of SACNAS Membership - All members of a SACNAS Chapter must be members of the national SACNAS organization. For any students or advisors who have never been SACNAS members before, SACNAS offers a one-year complimentary membership. Each person must create a SACNAS profile through MySACNAS first; next, the Chapter Affiliate Membership Dues Waiver (PDF) for each of these individuals should be completed and submitted at the time of chapter application.
