A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide. To qualify as a mentor you must
1)
be a college graduate,
2) have experience working with underrepresented undergraduate
or graduate students,
3) have an invested interest in helping students attain degrees in science,
math or technology, and
4) be a great listener willing to share your own experience with students.
Myth #1: You must have a Ph.D. to mentor a student in the sciences.
Because the SACNAS conference is inclusive, the professionals who attend come from many
different backgrounds, hold different degrees, and have overall diverse professional experiences.
SACNAS encourages all professionals to become mentors at the SACNAS conference.
Myth #2: Students need only one mentor to help guide them.
We all have different needs at different times in our life.
SACNAS realizes and encourages the fact that students need to have
more than one mentor to address the diverse needs of their career.
