SACNAS Senior Program Manager for Postdoc & Professional Programs

SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists. SACNAS is looking for an exceptional individual who desires to work within the not-for-profit environment to design, coordinate, execute and manage professional development and leadership development programs for underrepresented scientists. This senior level program manager reports to the Director of Programs and is a member of the SACNAS Programs Team. This is a full time, career position based in Santa Cruz, California.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, manage and develop existing leadership and professional development programs for URM Scientists, including professional chapters and the SACNAS Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). The SACNAS Summer Leadership Institute offers unparalleled training for underrepresented minority (URM) scientists interested in advancing their leadership skills.
  • Create unique programming, including online programs, for science career development, professional development and leadership development for SACNAS postdoc and professional members
  •  Create programs through which SACNAS postdoc and professional members can engage in SACNAS activities including mentoring, volunteering and SACNAS leadership.
  • Contribute to building the resources and infrastructure necessary to ensure the delivery of high quality leadership development and professional development services
  • Ensure effective processes are in place to identify and assess professional and leadership development needs within a professional community and evaluate the effectiveness of the service delivery portfolio
  • Ensure that the values, mission, and strategic vision of SACNAS are evident throughout all programming initiatives
  • Collaborate and coordinate with teams and individuals internal and external to SACNAS
  • Implement program management tools to evaluate and track specific project outcomes
  • Track and plan financial aspects of programs
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities for programs
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Programs

  • Commitment to the Society’s values, mission, goals, and program
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited University
  • 3 years proven professional experience in science career development, leadership development or professional development in higher education, government or industry
  • Experience developing or delivering innovative professional development programs
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Experience and high comfort level with public speaking
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.  Occasional regional and national travel will be required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality around sensitive and complex relationships and projects
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • History with SACNAS
  • Experience in science higher education
  • Familiarity with planning and executing small and large group events
  • Experience facilitating the development of online programming and social networking aimed at a professional audience
  • Grants management, writing, and reporting experience
  • Bilingual is helpful
