Distinguished Awards
2009 Nominations Packet Deadline: May 1, 2009
The SACNAS Distinguished Awards, presented at the society's
annual national conference, recognize those who have dedicated themselves
to science, education and mentoring. Awardees are those who have
reached the top of their field and continue to serve as role
models for the next generation of minority scientists.
Call for Nominations
Individuals are encouraged to nominate colleagues or themselves
for the SACNAS Distinguished Awards. Names of nominees and nominee curriculum
vita (CV) can be submitted by email to editors@sacnas.org.
Award Details
Award recipients will receive registration, travel, and lodging to the annual
SACNAS conference and will be presented with recognition of their award
during a special plenary session meal function.
Awards Eligibility
All nominees must have a demonstrated record of encouraging minority
students to pursue advanced science degrees, in addition to the eligibility requirements
for the specific award.
Distinguished Scientist Award
Hold a Ph.D. and be 45 years of age or older. Currently conduct an active research
project and participate in research and educational activities at the national
level.
Distinguished Undergraduate Mentor Award
Hold a Ph.D. and a faculty position at a four-year undergraduate institution.
Participate in minority education activities at the local or national level.
Distinguished Community/Tribal College Mentor Award
Hold a faculty position at a community or tribal college. Participate in minority
education activities at the local or national level.
Distinguished Professional Mentor Award
Hold a staff or administrative position at a college or university, within government,
or in private industry for at least 10 years. Participate in minority education,
advocacy, or mentoring activities at the local or national level.
Distinguished K-12 Educator Award
Hold a faculty position at a K-12 school for at least 10 years. Participate in
minority education or mentoring activities as a lead teacher, community outreach
liaison, program innovator, or similar position. Have a demonstrated record of
encouraging minority students to excel in the sciences.
Nominations Packet
Deadline: May 1, 2009
SACNAS Distinguished Awards nomination packet requirements include the following materials:
- Cover letter for nomination (including award (see above) for which the individual is nominated)
- CV of nominated individual
- 100- to 300-word third person narrative biography of nominated individual (NOT a CV Biosketch)
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Supporting materials related to the eligibility requirements (see above) of the award for which the individual is nominated, such as:
- details regarding the individual's record of encouraging minority students to pursue advanced science degrees
- research interests and honors, accolades, or awards
- articles written about the individual
