SACNAS Leadership Programs

SACNAS is proud to offer two programs as part of our on-going leadership initiatives. Our goal is to develop the next generation of underrepresented minority STEM leaders whose leadership contributions will serve to strengthen and unify our communities at the local, national and global levels. The institutes prepare participants to assume leadership roles in the global scientific community by offering advanced strategic trainings that develop critical leadership skills.

Overview: Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) 

The Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) provides premier training for motivated underrepresented minority (URM) scientists, laying the foundation for them to lead institutional transformation. In collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the LPSLI is an intensive five-day course featuring small group exercises, keynote speakers, leadership development planning, networking opportunities, and extensive community building among selected participants.

Program Goals

  • Offer an unparalleled curriculum that focuses on issues specific to the needs of underrepresented minority (URM) science leadership.
  • Establish and support a rich network of leadership-minded URM scientists.
  • Provide participants with take-away tools and individual planning to leverage leadership advancement at their home institutions.


  • Must be a SACNAS member at the time of application submission
  • Doctorate degree required
  • STEM field preferred
  • Postdocs, early career, and mid-career professionals in academia, industry, government, and non-profits are invited to apply

Overview: SACNAS - HHMI Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI)

Developed in partnership with HHMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute), the Advanced Leadership Institute builds on the curriculum of the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) preparing LPSLI alumni for expanded leadership roles by diving into the core leadership competencies needed to become leaders in their organization.  

Program Goals

  • Provide the next generation of top-level leaders among URM STEM professionals the skills they need for advanced leadership.
  • Equip LPSLI alumni with tools based on current business approach to increase LPSLI alum presence in government, higher education, and industry.
  • Train LPSLI alumni to leverage networks to enhance their spheres of influence.
  • Prepare LPSLI alumni for future executive team leadership at an institutional level. 


  • LPSLI Alumni
  • Must be a SACNAS member at the time of application submission
  • Open to mid-career professionals with at least six years of professional experience (including postdoc fellowship)
