SACNAS Honors Distinguished SACNISTAs with the 2017 Presidential Service Awards

SALT LAKE CITY, UT—The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) honored Stony Brook University’s Chief Diversity Officer LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD and George R. Negrete, Ph.D, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas, San Antonio, with the 2017 Presidential Service Awards at its annual three-day conference centered around science, mentorship, professional development, and networking. 2017 SACNAS – The National Diversity in STEM Conference is one of the largest and most diverse gatherings for underrepresented minority (URM) STEM students and professionals in the country, and will be attended by nearly 4,000 students and professionals from October 19-21 at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

This year’s SACNAS Presidential Service Awardees– who are honored based on their years of continued contributions to SACNAS– were selected by President Lino Gonzalez.

“While the 2017 awardees have made individual contributions to the Society, SACNAS in turn has been influential in guiding their careers, providing a safe place for them to network, come together, and help each other. These recipients are humble leaders with great heart and dedication, and they have made SACNAS better from their participation in it,” said SACNAS President Lino Gonzalez.

LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD
Chief Diversity Officer, Stony Brook University

LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD, is a critical ethnographer and bioethicist who currently serves as Chief Diversity Officer for Stony Brook University where he leads efforts to institutionalize diversity, equity, and inclusion for all campuses of the University. Prior to Stony Brook, Dr. Bitsóí served in administrative and faculty positions at Harvard, Dartmouth, Georgetown and most recently, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In addition, Dr. Bitsóí serves on several national boards and associations, including the National Advisory Council (NAC) for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE), the National Research Advisory Council (NRAC) for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Chairs the Native American Affairs Committee for the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Dr. Bitsóí earned a bachelor of science degree with honors from the University of New Mexico (1995), where he was initiated into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He holds a master of education degree from Harvard University (1998) where he was initiated into another prestigious honor society—Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Bitsóí earned a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania (2007) where his research focused on access and equity issues for Native Americans in higher education, a subject upon which he continues to publish. Admirably, Dr. Bitsóí has devoted his career to broadening the participation of underrepresented, underserved and unmentioned students to become scientists, researchers and scientifically-informed community members. Dr. Bitsóí relies on indigenous epistemologies to guide his work and emphasizes that diversity is a constantly evolving, interdependent ecosystem that requires mindful participation by everyone. Dr. Bitsóí has been honored and recognized for his diversity and inclusion work by various organizations including the Navajo Nation, Harvard Medical School, University of Central Florida, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Northern Arizona University, and the North American Indian Center of Boston.

George R. Negrete, Ph.D
Professor of Chemistry, University of Texas, San Antonio

Dr. Negrete received a BS in Chemistry from Stanford University (1984) and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from UC Santa Cruz (1990). After post-doctoral research at UCSF, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1994. His laboratory has been developing routes to novel amino acids for enhancing the effectiveness of drug delivery and synthesizing novel hydrocarbons for photonic applications. Like other faculty members he wears several other hats: i) a teacher seeking better ways to increase the success of undergraduate science students; ii) a research mentor engaged in training students and postdocs; and iii) a leader in student development efforts including director of the NSF-STEM-supported FAST Program at UTSA. Dr. Negrete has engaged in extensive service contributions to UTSA, the American Chemical Society, NIH Review Panels, and SACNAS to increase educational quality and expand the opportunities for historically underrepresented groups in the sciences.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT-La Sociedad para el Avance de los Chicanos/Hispanos y Nativos Americanos en las Ciencias (SACNAS) honró al Director de Diversidad de la Universidad de Stony Brook LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD y George R. Negrete, Ph.D, profesor de química en la Universidad de Texas-San Antonio, con los President Service Awards 2017 en su conferencia anual de tres días centrada en las ciencias, mentoría, desarrollo profesional y networking. 2017 SACNAS – La Conferencia Nacional de Diversidad en STEM es una de las mayores y más diversas reuniones de estudiantes, profesionales y académicos minoritarios en áreas STEM alrededor del país que se llevará a cabo en el Salt Palace Convention Center del 19 al 21 de octubre en Salt Lake City.

Los ganadores del President Service Award de SACNAS de este año, que son honrados en base a sus años de contribuciones a SACNAS, fueron seleccionados por el presidente Lino González.

“Si bien los premiados de 2017 han hecho contribuciones individuales a la Sociedad, SACNAS a su vez ha sido influyente en la orientación de sus carreras, brindándoles un lugar seguro para que se conecten, se reúnan y se ayuden entre sí. Estos premiados son líderes humildes con gran corazón y dedicación, y han mejorado SACNAS con su participación”, aseveró el presidente de SACNAS, Lino González.

LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD
Director de Diversidad, Universidad de Stony Brook

LeManuel Lee Bitsóí (Diné), EdD, es un etnógrafo crítico y bioético que actualmente se desempeña como Director de Diversidad de la Universidad de Stony Brook, donde dirige los esfuerzos para institucionalizar la diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión en todos los campus de la universidad. Antes de Stony Brook, el Dr. Bitsóí ocupó cargos administrativos y docentes en Harvard, Dartmouth, Georgetown y, más recientemente, en Rush University Medical Center en Chicago. El Dr. Bitsóí confía en las epistemologías indígenas para guiar su trabajo y enfatiza que la diversidad es un ecosistema interdependiente en constante evolución que requiere la participación consciente de todos. George R. Negrete, Ph.D.
Profesor de Química, Universidad de Texas, San Antonio

El Dr. Negrete recibió una licenciatura en Química de la Universidad de Stanford (1984) y un doctorado. en Química Orgánica de UC Santa Cruz (1990). Después de la investigación postdoctoral en UCSF, se unió a la facultad de química en la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio en 1994. Su laboratorio ha estado desarrollando rutas a aminoácidos novedosos para mejorar la efectividad del suministro de fármacos y sintetizar nuevos hidrocarburos para aplicaciones fotónicas. Al igual que otros miembros de la facultad, usa varios otros sombreros: i) un maestro que busca mejores formas de aumentar el éxito de los estudiantes de ciencias de pregrado; ii) un mentor de investigación dedicado a la formación de estudiantes y postdoctorados; y iii) un líder en esfuerzos de desarrollo estudiantil, incluido el director del programa FAST UTSA apoyado por NSF-STEM. El Dr. Negrete ha participado en extensas contribuciones de servicios a UTSA, la American Chemical Society, NIH Review Panels y SACNAS para aumentar la calidad de la educación y ampliar las oportunidades para los grupos históricamente menos representados en las ciencias.
