Board President Dr. Lino Gonzalez and board member Dr. David Burgess talk about stereotype threat, implicit bias, mentorship, and persistence in a detailed look at the lack of diversity in the biotechnology industry by Nature.
“The first time I ever met another American Indian who was a scientist, I was a senior graduate student,” said Dr. Burgess. “And so, like with many underrepresented minorities, there is a question as to whether you fit in. All those feelings of belonging are raised.”
“You don’t always need a role model that has the same ethnic or cultural background,” added Dr. Gonzalez. “You need folks who are willing to mentor anyone, from any background, without implicit biases.”
