Board Member Dr. David Burgess to be AAAS Section Chair-Elect

SACNAS congratulates Board member, Lifetime member, and Boston College Professor Dr. David Burgess, on his recent election as Chair-Elect of the Section Biological Sciences at American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

“I look forward to working with the Section of Biological Sciences and all of AAAS on our shared commitment to diversity and inclusion, which is also the core foundation of SACNAS,” said Dr. Burgess, who first joined SACNAS in 1979. “Having served on the AAAS Committee on Opportunity in Science, I know that AAAS has led many national efforts for diversity in science and there will be many opportunities for SACNAS to partner on these common goals.”

Dr. Burgess attended Santa Rosa Junior College before transferring to California State Polytechnic College, where he discovered his love for the study of cells. He credits multiple teachers and professors throughout his education, for providing the advice and support he needed to complete his PhD at the University of California, Davis.

Since then, Dr. Burgess has served as faculty at multiple colleges and universities. He was President of SACNAS from 1998 to 2000 and re-elected to the Board in 2017. He was also elected Fellow of AAAS in 2004 and Fellow of American Society for Cell Biology in 2017. Today his research focuses on how cells change shape, and how those processes are regulated using the cytoskeleton.

Dr. Burgess will begin his term as Section Chair-Elect in February 2019.
