SACNAS Life Member Dr. John Augusto has been appointed the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at Georgia State University. Currently the Assistant Vice Provost for Experiential Learning at the University of Kansas, Dr. Augusto will begin his new position on February 1, 2018.
Dr. Augusto looks forward to his position as Dean at a university nationally recognized for both its innovation and commitment to diversity. He is most excited for the opportunity to strengthen the college-to-career connection and views this as a perfect match to his passion for cultivating career-focused learning opportunities in higher education.
In 2013, Dr. Augusto participated in the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) and went on to complete the SACNAS-HHMI Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI) in 2016. He believes his involvement in both ALI and LPSLI were critical to his growth and development as a leader in higher education.
“The mentoring I have received at both SACNAS programs, especially from Dr. Robert Barnhill, has given me the confidence to strive for bigger and bolder professional goals,” he explained, “In addition, the opportunity to learn and think about leadership with mentors/facilitators Dr. Joe Garcia and Dr. Donna Blancero has really helped shape my practice of leadership within my university and across higher education.” He considers peer support and career mentorship to be the largest benefits SACNAS continuously provides.
Since his first introduction to SACNAS 20 years ago, Dr. Augusto has greatly contributed to our community through peer networking, participation in leadership programs, and by serving as the Master of Ceremonies at the 2013 SACNAS Conference in San Antonio.
As a Life Member of SACNAS, I know I will continue to support the organization as we work to develop and grow the current and future diversity of leaders in STEM.
Congratulations Dr. Augusto!
