Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), issued the following statement in response to violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities:
“As an inclusive organization at the intersection of STEM, culture and community, SACNAS condemns the racism, discrimination, and violence that continues to be perpetrated against AAPI communities since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hate crimes against Asian communities have surged over 150% in the last year. Within the STEM community, we must educate ourselves on racism in all its forms and combat harmful misconceptions about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
We encourage our members to include support and education about how to help AAPI communities in their anti-racist activism, and to hold space for those who are grieving in your institutions, labs, chapters and beyond. SACNAS sees you, we support you, and we stand with you.”
