“This award validates all the hard work and long hours that the University of Chicago SACNAS has put in to raising our community and strengthening all kinds of diversity in all fields of STEM,” said Chapter President Juan Vazquez. “We receive this award, not just for ourselves, but on behalf of past leaders who paved the way for us; on behalf of our support networks, who helped us get here; and on behalf of future SACNASistas, who will continue to empower everyone to be at home in STEM. With this recognition, we hope to inspire every child and young adult to overcome their doubts and achieve greatness; and to encourage other generations to continue their support so that we can help them get there.”

Each SACNAS chapter develops programming on its respective campus focused on networking, professional development, scientific engagement, and community service. As part of its mission, SACNAS supports this nationwide network largely through direct outreach and year-round contact with individual chapters. Every year SACNAS recognizes a handful of chapters at its National Diversity in STEM Conference that demonstrate outstanding achievements throughout the past twelve months. This recognition serves as a platform to share best practices across the entire network of SACNAS chapters.

“The SACNAS Chapters were imagined as a partnership between SACNAS National and institutions with the goal of advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM. Each year we recognize the emerging STEM leaders and their creative and timely efforts to achieving true diversity in STEM,” said SACNAS President Dr. Sonia Zárate. “We are proud to be a partner to and recognize the 2019 Chapter of the Year recipient, the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago, along with the other chapters honored and the larger network of SACNAS student chapters nationwide, are a galvanizing force ensuring that the scientific enterprise is able to benefit from the potential that diversity holds.”
